About Corey

Corey Sevett photoI am a composer and music teacher, and currently offer piano, music theory and music composition lessons out of my home. I earned NCTM (Nationally Certified Teacher of Music) status from the Music Teachers National Association in 2020.

In 1981 and 1983 I earned bachelor and masters degrees in music composition from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, with an emphasis on piano. I started piano lessons at age eight and ended at age 21. I was fortunate enough to have had eight different piano teachers during that time, and I learned a lot from all of them. I also learned a great deal from guiding my own children in their music lessons over the past ten years, and continue to learn and grow as a teacher through my involvement with two organizations, Minneapolis Music Teachers Forum and Minnesota Music Teachers Association.

I have a great love of music and wish to pass that love on to others. My goals are

1.  to help every student, whatever their age, to learn quickly and have fun

2.  to give students a greater understanding and appreciation of how music is constructed

3.  to increase students’ musical skills, including performing, listening, and sight reading

4.  to encourage and teach students to express themselves through music

My lessons are tailored to each student’s learning style and goals. I utilize many methods of teaching music to create the best learning environment for the individual student.

If you are considering lessons for your child or for yourself, I urge you to talk with a potential teacher about your goals for the lessons. Be sure the teacher is someone you and your child feel comfortable with. Finally, I urge you to take the lessons as seriously as you do reading, writing and arithmetic. Learning to play music is wonderfully enriching, and should be a part of every person’s life.
